The realm of stoner rock is not one I’m well versed in, however maybe I should consider it because of this new EP from Supervillain. A self titled EP, this contains some pretty killer grooves and energetic vocals. While I’m not too sure the band wants to be labeled “stoner rock”, the only thing I have to compare it to are the likes of Spiritual Beggars, Sixty Watt Shaman, Clutch, and other similar bands.
Supervillain isn’t purely stoner rock though, they have a distinct feeling of classic hard rock in the vein of AC/DC, Motorhead, and even a little Overkill. This is primarily due to the vocal stylings of singer Morgan Adams. Mix a little Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth with some Bon Scott, and throw in a little Roger Daltrey for smoothness and you have yourself some Morgan Adams. The venomous licks that spew from his forked tongue are quite formidable, I can see them working quite well in the live setting.
Speaking of live setting, the production on this album really makes you feel like you’re at a live show. The somewhat complex drumming would be quite the sight to behold. There’s a tinge of echo on the vocals, and the drums and guitars were left a little treble-heavy without compromising bass too much, so it feels as if you’re rocking out at a huge stadium. While it isn’t a Devin Townsend level of production, it’s pretty incredible considering that this entire EP was produced, recorded, and packaged by the group themselves. I challenge you to be that dedicated to your band!
This EP is a pretty good glimpse of what Supervillain can put forth. It would be great to see these guys get some big label attention, they seem to have the fire and inspiration going for them at this point in their careers. While this isn’t a perfect offering (the song “Paradise Lust” gets repetitive), it’s a great start for a band who seems to have their shit together. If you like groove-oriented stoner rock, consider Supervillain. Hell, stoner rock isn’t even my “bag”, and I enjoyed this EP!
