Do you think Hatebreed has wussed out on their last two records? Do you think All Out War lays on the hurt like no ones business? If you answered yes to the following two questions, then Grimlock is exactly what you’re looking for. This Massachusetts based hardcore quintet bring forth the crunch from start to finish on their latest EP on Life Sentence Records appropriately entitled Crusher. It’s all here, the breakdowns that will rip your face off, the mosh riffs that will have the pits running like a heard of rabid wildabeasts, the lyrics with conviction, and the mob chants. What more could you ask for in a hardcore album?
As soon as I popped this disc in, the first thing that came to mind is All Out War. Is that a bad thing? Hell no, not in my book, and the nice thing is Grimlock doesn’t rip the band off by any means. They just have a sound similar to them. Dan Reynolds and Jon Zera present some heavy-ass breakdowns, a nice dose of melody here and there, and plenty of grooves and chugs to line-up with the best of them. Dave Sroka does a good job behind the kit, tossing in a couple blast beats here and there and going hard on the double kicks when it counts. John Lock continues the heaviness with his mid range roar.
If you are at all into the type of hardcore that pounds you into dust, this is right up your alley. In my opinion, Grimlock puts the new Hatebreed album to shame with Crusher. If you like hardcore, I highly recommend you check this out.
