Another competent yet ultimately unfulfilling power metal act graces the hallowed halls of MetalReview. Shining Fury, a band featuring Labyrinth tour drummer Ross Lukather (I know, that connection was a reach) has put out an album whose music is as generic as the band’s name.
Most peoples' gripes with power metal lie in the fact that the incredible virtuosity of the musicians doesn’t match the songwriting. That is, the fokkers can play but they have no soul. Sadly this is true of Shining Fury, there are really no surprises whatsoever aside from the terribly annoying intro track with a bunch of children singing some sort of playground tune. There’s absolutely nothing I can find that would set this album apart from the myriads of standard power metal flowing from the sewers of Europe. Every song is pretty much the exact same pace, with speedy double bass drums, super-generic and non-catchy vocal hooks (similar to a bad Virgin Steele chorus), and incessant power-chords on the guitars. It’s so soulless. To top it off, the production isn’t even all that great.
Even the press release that came with the album had nothing to say about them, it was merely a band history of who joined and when, and this band isn’t exactly a “who’s who” of power metal. I practically had to chain myself to the chair and force myself to listen to the whole album. If you’re bored of reading the review, then imagine how bored you’ll be of the album! Don’t bother with this one.
