The Collapse EP doesn’t waste any time, getting off to a blasty death-tech start with “Resent Complacency”. The song clocks in at two minutes and grabbed my attention immediately, and it would have done so even without my knowledge of this band’s “all-star” caliber. Featuring Zac Joe (formerly of Cephalic Carnage) on guitar and Eric Brown (Vale of Pnath, Swashbuckle) on drums, Vimana is a new group that has honed their chops in other bands before taking on this project. The production on The Collapse EP is only so-so, but it does the job without anything terribly distracting, and it’s in keeping with many other releases underneath their genre umbrella.
“Destroy Industry” has an intro reminiscent of “Flight of the Bumblebee” on meth. It’s a grind-influenced, no-holds-barred attack, and the rest of the EP continues on this same rampage. There are no classical guitar interludes or keyboard solos to be found, just unadulterated raging riffs, blasts, and growls. There’s an occasional reprieve from the madness via solo guitar chugs and on “Fire Is Born”, the final track on this four-song release. The tempo is calm before gathering speed just shy of a minute into the seven-minute track. This song possesses the greatest dynamics on hand by far, and it's proof that Vimana has songwriting chops beyond brief and bombastic technical death / grind tunes. There are plenty of melodic ideas throughout the song’s tenure that play themselves out without becoming stale or overly fragmented. Due to its length in comparison to the other tracks, the song could almost be viewed as several works culled into one. When the first riff makes a fierce return at the song’s conclusion, it melds each previous idea together cohesively and brutally.
Vimana has come out with a tasty little EP that'll break your teeth in the best way possible, and they've piqued my interest enough to pick up their full-length, whenever it’s released.
