Vintersorg
Visions From the Spiral Generator

I believe there are two kinds of people in the music world. People that kind of fell into it, and there are people that were just meant to be musicians. Examples of the second would be, in my opinion, Mikeal Akerfeldt, Chuck Schuldiner, and the person under current dissection, Vintersorg. Vintersorg's latest effort is definitely a masterpiece in my opinion, hence the old 666. He beautifully blends black metal with pure melodic mastery. As most that are familiar with him, from his past work and his latest collaboration with Borknagar, know he has an amazing voice. He's got a great raspy black metal voice and a mesmerizing clean voice. Enough of me gushing about the guy, how about his album. Well, let's start with musicianship. For this album Vintersorg played it smart and recruited Steve DiGiorgio, the bass god, to handle the awesome bass work on this album. Steve really gets a chance to show off his great skills in this album, for his bass lines are very audible. Some of my favorite stuff is the cool sounding intro from the song E.S.P. Mirage. The bass line he plays just plain and simple sounds cool. His bass skills are definitely those to be reckoned with. Mattias Marklund heads up the lead guitar and does a great job as well. He has some really cool solos included through out the album. Asgeir Mickelson is the man behind the kit. There's nothing really standout with his beats, it's just plain solid drumming. The production on this album is excellent. Everything is heard perfectly. You can hear Steve's awesome bass playing through out the entire album, the great acoustic work sounds perfect, the drums are crisp, and Vintersorg's voice truly shines, especially in the interlude during the song Universums Dunkla Alfabet. Although about half the lyrics aren't in English (I think it's Swedish, but I could be wrong), I still have to give this album a perfect score for what is in English. The lyrics are creative and thought provoking. Vintersorg deals a lot with the cosmos and the universe in the lyrics. His excellent writing ability empowered by great music and his outstanding voice just paint this awesome picture of the stars in my head. I thought about whether or not I should give this album a score for lyrics since half of them I can't read. After deliberating over it for about two days though, I just thought it really deserved the score it got, because I imagine the non-English lyrics are no less astounding than the English ones. I've been listening to this album for two weeks now and every time it still retains all the beauty of when I first popped it in my disc player. Everything about the album has me completely mesmerized. I've had songs caught in my head for days and loved it. I would find myself just going through entire songs in my head at work. Songs like Universums Dunkla Alfabet had me entwined with Vintersorg's amazing vocal work. Spegelsfären's awesome keyboards with great black metal guitar work always kept me coming back for more. This is an album that is truly unique, and I don't plan on letting the great music die down from my ears anytime soon. Buy this album now and you too will have Visions from the Spiral Generator around you.
