Dulling Occams Razor

Well, Found Dead Hanging gets my vote for most original song titles of the year (see song titles like “Solar Powered Sun Destroyer” and “It’s Hard to Hail a Cab While Holding Yourself at Gunpoint”). Starting off a bit faint, Found Dead Hanging lays on the hurt about 20 seconds into the first song. Have no fear that Dulling Occams Razor lays on the hurt, with pounding aggression akin to bands like Mastodon and Cult of Luna, there is no lack of heaviness. There are also hints of Dillinger Escape Plan type craziness, but to a lesser extent. Each song on Dulling Occams Razor plods along with extreme heaviness, but that is where I think the problem for me lies with this band. Combining sludge with grind and hardcore, Found Dead Hanging try to obiliterate you with a sonic assault on the ears, but I can only get into the material offered here for so long. There are moments when the intensity is fun, but there’s just not enough that makes you want to come back for more. There are some technical parts that are pretty cool, like in “A .45 Calibur Defibrulator, A Prototype of Sorts” which contains some intense harmonic, high-pitched guitar work. The noisecore, as it is called, elements of this just aren’t as interesting as bands like Isis or Cult of Luna. If you are extremely big into this noisecore meets grind type of music, then this might be for you. But after a couple of spins I saw no real reason to pull out this disc for more. The blandness of an average release quickly set in for me.
