Eve Of Desecration

I’ve never been a huge fan of extremely fast, technically-minded black metal, but American outfit Ezurate pull off this often unwieldy recipe better than most. Eve of Desecration is an epic black metal release that maintains a modern approach to production and musicianship with riffs that harken back to black metal’s classic days. While a little excessive at fifteen tracks clocking in at over an hour in length, Ezurate’s music is consistently intense and enjoyable, if a little bloated and one-dimensional.
Ezurate employ an extremely technical drumming style that mainly consists of a non-stop barrage of double bass blast-beating, with little in the way of tempo variation or dynamic shifts. The constant charge of the drumming is the primary straw that stirs these tracks, but the riffs laid atop the percussion are well-crafted and often quite memorable, mainly drawing from the Norwegian school of tragic melody but also frequently dipping into razor-tight discordance and moodier ambience. The relentless speed of the album becomes more exhausting than exhilarating after awhile, however. Plenty of black metal bands employ steady, consistent tempos in their songs, but most of those bands don’t play as fast as Ezurate, and considering the length of the album the manic velocity gets tiresome at times.
Fortunately, Ezurate were wise enough to put obvious effort into the guitar side of things as well, making Eve of Desecration a solid offering in the hyper-speed black metal camp despite some issues with its relentless pacing. Those looking for more atmosphere and dynamic subtlety in their black metal won’t get too many miles out of this, but if you get a particular charge out of harsh blackened grimness with insanely fast drumming, Eve of Desecration is well worth your hour and five minutes.
Oh, and to any interested readers, try not to take too much notice of the absolutely hilarious/horrendous picture of these guys circulating the ‘net right now. The album doesn’t sound like it was made by pedophile clowns, if that helps.
