Son Of Aurelius
The Farthest Reaches
6.7
Technically proficient. Of sound mind and body. Nothing new, but nothing old.
And nothing memorable, unfortunately, but in this economic decline I just want it hard and fast. I'm not looking to put stock into anything. I'm not always looking to invest. Son Of Aurelius has filled that void in the graveyard of my heart (albeit the shallowest part, but a hole nonetheless) that collects all of the butter and sugar brought in through the ears and pushed along to the center through my n00b tube. It's gonna lead to a Hot Topic heart attack one of these days, and The Farthest Reaches is more of that completely unnecessary shit that just so happens to blare out with enough conviction and bit of skill to warrant snacking on every-so-often. Why? 1. The ability to write an actual song. It's hidden inside of a thirty-seven minute diet-TBDM/Faceless-lite circle jerk, but it's there, and sometimes even quite adhesive (check the back-to-back attack of "Olympus Is Forgotten" and "Facing The Gorgon"). 2. Bragging rights. Their bassist attended the Berkelee College of Music, and their guitarist used to rip for a 'lil band called Animosity. That latter advantage may not conquer with all of the rage and articulation that one would expect from a student and a road-dog, but it still puts the firepower heads above most of their peers. Now if only they could better reflect their mentors, from Schuldiner to Suiçmez, they could become a high school musical to be reckoned with. Guess I'll wait in the wings. You never know. It could actually happen to these kids.
Too smart for fans of most Hotcore, but still handicapped to those of us that know better. But like I said, sometimes I just wanna play dumb, stumble into a death-as-a-second-language course, steal some lunch money, and then fall asleep at my desk in a pile of my own drool.
A righteous soundtrack to a hot cafeteria lunch.
