Anger As Art come at ya out of Pasedena, firmly half-in and half-out of the modern thrash resurgence. Half in because they’re a relatively new thrash act (forming in 2006) who play things on the aggressive side, and half out because these aren’t kids straight out of high school, but rather seasoned vets who have played in various acts going back nearly 30 years. Three members were in 80's speedsters Abattoir. Not familiar? Don’t worry, as no familiarity is necessary for Disfigure to put a big shit-eatin’ grin on your thrashin’ face.
Another way that Anger As Art are half-in-half-out of the current scene is through their sound. Like many of their contemporaries, they play a highly aggressive, Teutonic-influenced form of thrash, laced with a good amount of Show No Mercy-ish riffage and just a touch of Suicidal Tendencies’ punk attitude. The songs are nearly all three to five minutes in length, obviously foregoing a more epic approach. What sets them apart from other modern bands is their ample amounts of attitude. Vocalist (and guitarist) Steve Gaines channels all of your favorite ‘tude-exuding frontmen of the 80's: Zetro, Blitz, MegaDave, etc. The result is a dichotomy of aggression and neck-wrecking fun that should appeal equally to fans of Fabulous Disaster and Extreme Aggression.
Song highlights include opener “The Crush” and the one-two knockout finale of “Anger is a Gift” and “Dissention.” Even if the album does dip a bit in the middle, the pace never really lets up, making Disfigure an excellent slice for veteran thrash fans. So lace up those high-tops and jump in the circle pit, because Anger As Art are already providing the soundtrack.
