Boy, I hate writing up bands like Neurothing. As an aspiring musician, I can appreciate the skill required to execute the style this Polish act have chosen for themselves. Unfortunately, there’s very little to say at this juncture about that style. Specifically:
Murder Book is an effort to clone Destroy Erase Improve-era Meshuggah. It is not a particularly good effort.
That’s really all that needs to be said about the album, but in the interest of fairness, I’ll also acknowledge that Neurothing are rhythmically tighter than a piccolo snare, and that Murder Book’s desiccated production perfectly matches that of its primary inspiration. Unfortunately, their take on polyrhythmic prog-thrash is utterly devoid of the knack for catchiness that made DEI so special, and Murder Book blows by in an indistinguishable string of fractured rhythms and clattering kick-drum spurts.
With Meshuggah themselves still releasing compelling material and bands like Hacride, Car Bomb, Gojira and Coprofago building productively on their legacy, Neurothing simply don’t offer anything you can’t get elsewhere. Hopefully these gifted musicians will find a more distinctive outlet for their considerable talents in the future.
