Dave Brockie Experience
Songs for the Wrong

Ah the comedy record: the music industry's ultimate hit-or-miss. The Dave Brockie Experience (DBX) features three members from the ever-infamous GWAR: Dave "Oderus Urungus" Brockie, Brad "Jizmak Da Gusha" Roberts, and Mike "Balsac the Jaws of Death" Derks". This album ain't for the kiddies, as the majority of the humor is incredibly vulgar and tasteless, just the way we metalheads like it (having bit our tongues off being front row at a concert, we have no need for taste). Humor aside, this album is quite catchy. It's not metal at all, mostly a punk sound going on (their logo is a play on the Dead Kennedys logo). Punk isn't exactly the most complex and intricate of genres, so you can't expect anything over three minutes or a light-speed solo. Punk, as I've come to understand, is about lyrics and the message, be it a political or comedic one. This album sounds like what it mostly likely was: a bunch of drunk guys writing funny songs to simplistic riffs. The humor here is the main draw. Speaking of the humor, it's the kind of humor that is on the edge of being unfunny because it just about crosses the line - like when you want to laugh, but you're not sure if you should because it's so massively offensive, like the line "retarded chicks should be fucked and not heard" ("Hard for a Tard"). Most of the humor is along those lines: shocking, disgusting, and adult. The ever-cartoonish vocals of Dave Brockie play well with the bad humor. Don't let the ratings fool you; this album was rather enjoyable. Like Chris Farley, there's nothing intellectual about a fat fuck falling down and yelling, but it's still damn funny. I did find myself laughing at most of this album, but I question its staying power. I doubt it would be funny after repeated listens. As a critic, I must rate it low because it's not innovative and the songwriting is ultra-simple, but off the record I liked it quite a bit. Like I said, it's basically a hit or miss, so if you're into vulgar comedy, this is your record. Try to have fun with it, and it won't disappoint.
Hard for a Tard - When you're afraid to laugh because it's so offensive, that's good humor
Isn't it Grand - Everyone loves an Irish drinking song! OY!
