Live Noize (DVD)

Live Noize is one of three DVD reissues of old VHS titles. This live set from 1991 sits dead center of the three, as a little more desirable than the Through Time P.O.V. video retrospective, but paling next to the band’s first home video, Oidivnikufesin, from the classic Among the Living years. Live Noize captures the boys during the summer of 1991 at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheater during their tour with Public Enemy. A historic tour to be sure, but given what we know now, the bands' ground breaking marriage of metal and rap loses some of its luster simply because of what it spawned.

Without question the show is crowned by its finale, as the two bands take the stage together for their version of “Bring the Noise,” originally on the seminal, buy or die classic, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back. But the show was equally notable for the sheer number of covers included. Out of the eleven songs here (“Got the Time” is inexplicably missing from the listed tracklist), half of them were penned by others. Some were and continue to be live staples (”Antisocial” and “Got the Time”), some were a product of the tour (“Too Much Posse” and “Bring the Noise”), while another, Kiss’ “Parasite,” from Attack of the Killer B’s, just happened to be fresh at the time. The latter is interesting as something of a unique treat, but in truth the frenetic tempo ends up undercutting the crisp swagger that defines the song. Opening tracks from the band’s earlier efforts (“Efilnikufesin (N.F.L.)” and “A.I.R.”) are some of the highlights, and the mandatory “Indians” never fails to get the blood pumping. But after that things bog down with the overrated “Antisocial” and ponderous “I’m the Man.” That leads to the show stopping tag team event of the night, as Flavor Flav and Chuck D perform “Too Much Posse” from the side of the stage as a warning shot. As both bands (along with others--most notably Ice T) take the stage for the metallic “Bring the Noise,” you have to respect the power and collaboration of these two titans from separate worlds. It’s billed as a celebration, and it clearly lives up, as a mob of bodies jump, bob, and mosh around the stage both during and well after the song.

At an hour long, the video is a quick view, and the “backstage footage” is no more than quick montages between songs. If you can only pick up one of these reissues, Oidivnikufesin, is the clear choice. Although it’s been a while, I remember the VHS version from years ago, and it offers not only more content, but comes from the band’s zenith. Still, this is a decent little flick as well, and if you can find it for a good price, you could do worse.
