Avsky means 'disgust' in Swedish. Avsky is a black metal band. Avsky is from Sweden. Avsky has a lot to offer. Avsky isn't the most memorable thing I've heard in recent months/years and in the wild and crazy world of black metal these days, it doesn't cut it.
The sound is basically (I say this a lot) Darkthrone meets early Gorgoroth. You know the routine. The production is *sigh* spot on Darkthrone but with just a litttle half a gram of additional beef to the guitars. There's really not much else to say about what they sound like. It's just really Darktrthrone meets early Gorgoroth.
What makes Malignant a bit of a wash as an album is that there is really nothing to it. The lyrics are the usual misanthropic anthems and there are no real breaks from the black metal fuzz and d-beat drumming. The slow parts aren't slow enough and lack the doomy bass needed to make them effective, while the blastbeats and other fast parts do little to break up the monotony of the album.
However, there are some rather interesting riffs to be found here. About two riffs out of the five or six in each song are actually really good. But the album drifts into the background as it goes on and leaves little that sticks to your ribs, ears, or short-term memory.
While Avsky isn't a complete and total disappointment, Malignant is really just another black metal album. I've heard way worse than this, so if you're a black metal aficianado you might eat this up. If you're not, then Avsky's not going to do much for you.
