Pain Remixes The Known

Dear Mom,

How was the Necrophagist show? I saw them a couple years ago and they were really good. It's too bad I couldn't make it out to see them this year, though, because I'm a big Marco Minnemann aficionado. His drum solos are great. In fact, he'll be joining Italy's jazz metallers Ephel Duath on their forthcoming record Through My Dog's Eyes. Speaking of ED, I'm listening to Pain Remixes the Known - an "electronic deconstruction of the 2005 album Pain Necessary to Know," as they put it in the liner notes - and while there's definitely some cool stuff going on, I'll be surprised if I ever revisit it.

It's pretty easy to recognize the songs, however, which is half the battle of a remix album, I guess, but I can't recall a single remix album that I've spun more times than I can count on one hand. This one's long, too, at about 45 minutes, offering nine songs that each began with the word "Hole" followed by Roman numerals. So the first track is "Hole I," the second is "Hole II," and I'm sure you get the point. If not, ask Dad. I'm sure he'd be able to explain it to you better than I can. Though the packaging is ho-hum, some parts of the recording are quite infectious - the beginning of "Hole IV" and "Hole VI," most notably.

Anyhow, I know you've been asking me continually about which Ephel Duath album you should buy first - I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond, but they finally apprehended my stalker (Michael Wuensch), which has eased my mental burden tremendously - and I say you go with either The Painter's Palette or Pain Necessary to Know. Either will treat you right. RePhormula's worth hunting down as well, but ED were BM-oriented then instead of jazz metal like they are these days. But yeah, even I can't recommend Pain Remixes the Known, and I'm a fan. Talk to you soon.

Love from Your Son,

Jason
