Callenish Circle
My Passion // Your Pain
10
Probably the most underrated melodic death metal band out there, Callenish Circle has created a successor to their absolute masterpiece of an album, "Flesh_Power_Dominion" in the beautifully gruesome form of "My Passion//Your Pain". The Dutch quintet has slowly been climbing the ranks of the top deathrash metal bands for the past 11 years now. The question remains though. is "My Passion//Your Pain" on par with "Flesh_Power_Dominion"? Possibly the best thing about Callenish Circle is the fact that they have such a massively outstanding beat in every song. You're pummeled with catchy riff after catchy riff, and welding them all together in a fiery blaze is that incredible beat. My hat goes off to drummer Gavin Harte for being able to switch time signatures on the fly. The guitar work of this band is another thing that is just indescribably GOOD. This is the heaviest Callenish album to date, yet somehow it remains melodic. Heavy, HEAVY melodies are just what the doctor ordered, and "My Passion//Your Pain" delivers them over and over again in large, wonderfully painful doses. The cherry on top is the vocal delivery of Pat Savelkoul. So multifaceted are his vocals, from the guttural growl to the thrashy rasp, in my opinion he is the premiere aggressive vocalist in the business. The opening track, "Soul Messiah", is the perfect opener. It's quick paced, somewhat simple, yet complex enough to make you wonder what could be in store for you in the hour to come. Track 3, "Forsaken", is tied for best Callenish Circle song ever, second only to "Take Me Along" from "Flesh_Power_Dominion". The insanely catchy riffage coupled with the aforementioned beats pull you in and shred your insides. The album hits its stride with tracks like "What Could Have Been", "This Truculent Path", and "My Hate Unfolds". To close out the album, they finish in style with "Out Of The Body", a Pestilence cover. All one needs to hear are the words "Callenish Circle" to automatically think "contender for album of the year". "My Passion//Your Pain" is yet another wonderfully solid album from one of the top bands of the melodic deathrash genre. Different enough from "Flesh_Power_Dominion", yet staying true to what makes Callenish Circle great, this album is a must-have. If this release doesn't solidify their inclusion in the group of top bands of the here-and-now, then nothing will. Wrathchild's Choice Cuts: Forsaken - Good god, the riffage never ceases This Truculent Path - Pinpoints the exact point where the album hits it's long, shimmering, metallic stride My Hate Unfolds - Sweet double bass surgically grafted to awesome riffs means awesome metal
