Two years ago, Metal Review gave a demo from Eden A.D. a glowing review. And two years after that review, I am tasked to review the latest self-released demo from this talented act. Fortunately, very recent news indicates that there is a label deal lined up now, but I will still take the liberty to review this three-song, fifteen-minute dose of melodic death because it is worth a listen.

Eden A.D. is a five-piece band out of the Big Apple that has mostly avoided being influenced by their American metalcore peers, instead playing a sound straight out of Gothenburg. This Swedish influence is ever-present on the first track of three, “The Icarus Factor”, where the melodic leads seem plucked straight from the strings of Jesper Stromblad’s axe (In Flames). Upbeat and aggressive drumming sets a fast and fun pace for this first song. Tommy’s vocals are a mid-pitched, hoarse bark, of the type that melodic death is known for. His particular cadence reminds me of Patrick from Callenish Circle, only not mixed as deep.

“Murder Ballad” shows a darker side of Eden A.D., beginning with a blast-beaten fury that underpins thrashing riffs. But, the song takes a slower turn, with drawn-out, somber leads and a generally bleak atmosphere. “Relevance” finishes off the EP, picking up where “Murder Ballad” left off, with downtrodden melodies. At two minutes, the tempo increases, changing the mood of the whole song. After reaching a crescendo, everything goes quiet, the guitar goes clean, and a long, noodly solo leads to one last pummeling heavy section.

Eden A.D. has some chops, and they would shine through even better with a professional production job. The mix here seems to be strong on the treble and the bass, but the middle tones lack “oomph”. This will hopefully be remedied the upcoming label-backed release. Relevance is an appetizing sample of melodic death with a retro feel, and I am looking forward to the main course.
