If the above clusterchrist strikes you as elegant, skillful, and appealing, then check out Foetopsy's latest! One of the great wonders of the world is not why you see gorgeous college girls holding hands with skinny, mop headed, skateboard toting, slack-jawed MTV watchers, but rather why I thought this band had a shot at becoming something substantial after actually purchasing Dyspartum several years ago. Maybe it was their drummer, Jon Engman, who gave them an uber-brutal Colombian-esque sound, with a hell of a lot less kick triggering and much faster blasts. Or maybe it was because there were notably less silly samples that were more memorable than the songs themselves. But instead of heading in the direction of something semi-respectable like Brodequin or Enmity, they have taken the road paved for goofy mindlessness traveled on by countless other joke goregrind bands. I know Engman is capable of more than this, but their rotating "power-chordists" seem stuck in the detuned (and horribly hollow sounding) punk 2 chord sliding riffs that bands like Leng Tche use sparingly (possibly just to show their "roots"). So, my question to Foetopsy is as follows: Is it about creating something of value, or is it about being the class clown? I honestly believe it took more time to find the right movie clip than it did to write the songs here.
Dyspartum showed flickers of potential in the ultra-brutal death realm. In The Bathroom, quite simply, does not show potential for anything. Disappointing? Sure. I would like to see another Internicine Excoriation or Nailshitter pumping out overwhelmingly over the top hellish brutal death. Fortunately I won't lose any sleep over it though. Still interested? Check out their my_kid's_space songs, and I assure you, you have heard the entire album...3 times over.
