Review of Killwhitneydead - Nothing Less Nothing More

Synopsis:

If Killwhitneydead can release two almost indistinguishable versions of the exact same album simultaneously, then I can do the same with my reviews of said albums.

Review:

North Carolina’s inexplicably popular Killwhitneydead return with two releases, one of which, Hell To Pay is only available at shows or via the internet. The thing is, the only way I can tell the albums apart is by the samples, which, as with all their releases, are basically the only interesting parts of the albums.

Yes, once again mired in the misogynistic lyrics and second rate, breakdown filled, unimaginative deathcore is a plethora of interesting and entertaining movie and TV samples that admittedly keep me listening and guessing, but its certainly not for the music.

Among the huge amount of samples used on Hell to Pay and Nothing Less, Nothing More are some well placed samples from (thanks to Wikipedia) Serenity, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Devils Rejects, Closer, Braveheart, The Life of David Gale, Deadwood, Children of Men, Saw 2, Kill Bill 2, Sin City, Jarhead, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Batman Begins (and I guess every relevant pop culture movie released since their last effort- I guess they were too late tom use 300) are humorous injections from the likes of South Park, The 40-Year Old Virgin, Family Guy, Anchorman, Wayne World, Wedding Crashers, The Ref, The Last Boy Scout, and even Spongebob Squarepants. And much as I liked some of the injections, especially the ones from Serenity and Anchorman, and generally like a well placed sample in most of my metal, this is simply 2 long exercises in “sample-core’, with little depth in the songs around them.

The thing is, song wise, the samples simply A) take away from already pedestrian, predictable attempts at death metal and B) have you playing ‘guess that sample’ rather than listening to the music. Even when the band does really stray from their rather flat form of metal, such as the clean vocals on “Kill Them With Kindness” from Hell To Pay or the more Gothenburg solos of “It's Time to Teach Her A Lesson” from Nothing More.., it’s still no more than utterly uninteresting pseudo death metal. I have no idea why the kids have taken to this band other than for the samples, ‘cos folks I’ve listened to a lot of growly, screamy, breakdowny stuff in my years, and Killwhitneydead, on a purely musical level are about as forgetful as it gets. The truth is, we only see this many releases from this mediocre gimmick filled band because vocalist Matt Rudzinski owns Tribunal, which is a shame as there are some far better releases coming out on the label that could use the press and attention of Killwhitneydead (Woe of Tyrants, Liferuiner, The Demonstration, From the Shallows).

When half of your review is listing the samples rather than the songs, that’s assign the album simply isn’t memorable enough without the samples (or I’m because I am a horrible writer as I am sure will find out in the lashes).

In closure here’s my own few samples to close this review: you get nothing whatsoever if you guess them (alot like these albums).

"I dunno. That's that whole nature versus nurture question, isn't it? Was I born a cute, vindictive, little bitch or... did society make me that way? I go back and forth on that..."
