Synopsis:
So, what if you took some, loping, emotional doom metal and instead of the usual cavernous growls or power metal falsetto vocals, you glossed them with a dreamy, angelic female vocalist? You’d get Sweden’s evocative It Will Come and their splendid debut release.
Review:
Combining the band’s superbly produced Bound and 47 demos onto one excellent digipack disc, this album sort of comes across as [insert female fronted goth metal act on Napalm Records here] meets My Dying Bride’s more draining material (My Dying Bride had a bonus track called “It Will Come” on Like Gods of the Sun) and is a uniquely beautiful yet depressing take on doom metal.
When Louise Halldin’s ethereal vocals kick in about 1:40 into opener “Deeper Into Nothing” and the subsequent chord/vocal progression at 2:31 (which thankfully repeats), it’s a thing of sheer melancholic beauty and one of the most memorable doom moments of recent memory. Though the rest of the six tracks never quite reach that level of brilliance again, the songs do keep up a high, somber yet eloquent standard throughout.
Other highlights that make this a mighty fine album include the acoustic segue in “Mute Witnesses”, shimmering (yet slightly pained vocal) opening of “Sickness”, more hypnotic vocal progression of “Bound”, and delicate mood of closer “Forever Lost”. The band never feels the need to push the envelope or dress up their sultry doom with extraneous elements such as synths or forced urgency; the album just sort of saunters with a serene yet romantically bereft and regret filled lope like a beautiful but estranged hooker walking home in the dawn hours after a 9 hour mammoth session with 14 super rich Chinese businessmen.
Doom fans looking for something a bit more unique should definitely check this out, as should some other labels (I’m looking at you Firebox/Firedoom).
