Chronicles of Lost Purity? I Suffer Inc? We kind of know where this band is headed right?
The music itself isn't horrible, but why do we hear vocals over 90% of this? This is the kind of band that gets formed over a circle jerk induced by cheap wine and a copy of Dashboard Confessional Unplugged. I didn't even know this stuff existed. Yeah, shout, buddy....then wail...and yes, scream, because it's the scream that gives you your manhood back, right? I've never felt so 14 years-old before. To be honest, I probably wouldn't be so harsh if there were at least some effort made to give this recording some form of originality, but in almost 47 minutes of formulaic music I found none.
What's most frustrating about Chronicles of Lost Purity is the fact that there IS potential buried somewhere (deep) within. "In Between" is a great acoustic intermission, "Alexa the Witch" is almost catchy, and there's some impressive instrumental work on "When Heart Means Murder Pt. 1." Ultimately, however, I feel like the scope of this album is pretty limited, both in time and in staying power. There is and can only be one Hawthorne Heights, after all. Sure, these guys are slightly more technical and the clean vocals aren't nearly as present, but the sappy lyrics and song titles bring the band into similar territory, the key difference being that Hawthorne Heights knows a hook when it hears it.
