Serberus

I went into this review under the impression that Serberus was a black metal band, needless to say, the person that gave me that information is an idiot. Serberus is basically what their website describes, "Aggressive Melodic Death Metal". You can really hear the influence of bands like At the Gates and The Haunted in their sound. The only thing that reminds me of black metal on this release is the vokills. I found myself really getting into this album as I worked my way through the first couple of listens. The guitars are, as I mentioned, influenced by the Gothenburg sound. There is even some clean guitar sound thrown in for good measure. This comes as no surprise though. Both guitarists, Ivan (who recently left the band to continue his musical career with Throcult) and Dave cited At the Gates as an influence, along with Soilwork and The Haunted. The drum work is really solid. The double kicks are quite commanding and prominent throughout the album. The vokills follow along the lines of a black/death type sound. They're pretty good. There are some clean vokills too, which are decent, but nothing to get too excited about. The production on here is pretty good considering this is Serberus' first full length release. Everything sounds pretty good, especially the drums. I will be on the look out for future releases from the Colorado death metalers because I have a feeling this won't be the last we'll be hearing from them. My recommendation: if you have the extra couple of bucks, pick it up; it's some melodic death served up the right way.
