Virginia’s Everything Falls Together are evidently now defunct, but don’t let that stop you from downloading their EP from Gomek, as this self titled effort is a fairly solid platter of chaoscore in the vein of labelmates N.A.M.E. Unfortunately, however, this is only 17 minutes long, but is free, so length isn’t of the utmost relevance here.
EFT waste no time: “Catacombs and Catwalks” is a beefy complex number, with deep grind-like growls and traditional -core screams, which lunges at the listener right out of the gate. Matthew McMillan – not to be confused with drummer Jonathan McMillan – turns in a versatile, vocal performance, proving his worth several times over. Often the band will stop on a dime and then deftly plunge into a new section with little regard for smooth transitioning, but since the stop/start M.O. seldom calls for that, it works both in this case and many others. “Wolf in the House of the Sleeping Shepherd” is similar insofar as the tempo and approach change throughout. In fact, if anything, the constant variation is refreshing. The remaining tunes – “Catherine the Great’s Amazing Contraption,” “We Eat Our Young,” “Angel Lust and Sex on the Beach,” and “Robot Vs. Ursus Arctos” – aren’t too different from their predecessors, though “Catherine the Great’s Amazing Contraption” is perhaps the most coherent of the lot due to the recurring melody line that appears during select moments.
As I said earlier, Everything Falls Together have disbanded – as did Milner’s other endeavor Swarm of the Lotus – but one can locate former members in new projects. To see what they’re working on currently, check out Ghost of a Fallen Age, Too Pure to Die, and Kebert Xela, though they’re respectively more in tune with metalcore, hardcore, and indie rock. Everything Falls Together don’t best the stalwarts obviously, but it seems they were good while they lasted.
