Synopsis:

Why Max Cavalera hasn’t sued these guys yet is fucking beyond me.

Review:

Having heard and reviewed both Destroy and Instinct from this Hungarian group of Soulfly plagiarizers, I could have written this review in my sleep, without even giving Outcast a listen. However, being the consummate professional that I am, I gave Outcast a couple of listens and guess what?

Its still a complete and total Soulfly rip off.

Ektomorf is still ethnic/tribal laced ‘jumpdafuckup’ grooves and occasional thrash bursts dressed in a burly Tue Madsen production. Hoo-fucking-ray for what is wrong in today’s metal scene. Not only utterly copying another metal band shamelessly, but utterly copying another metal band shamelessly that was popular in the 1990’s and has their best days behind them.

There is not a single original note on Outcast, as (same as the last  two albums) basically the whole album mimics the better moments from Soulfly’s (admittedly at the time enjoyable) self-titled debut; i..e. “Eye For and Eye” and “No Hope=No Fear”. So then basically if you loved that album and you and your Soulfly soccer shirt and dirty dreads absolutely need more of this, then you will enjoy Outcast.

Now, that all being said, and doing some major backpedaling, if I am ever in the mood for some hefty tribal breakdowns and some piecemeal ethnic tinkering, Ektomorf are ashamedly enjoyable in a brainless sort of natural, head bobbing, carried by the grooves sort of robotic response. Tracks like “Outcast”, “We Rise, “I Choke”, ‘Leave Me Alone” will indeed get you jumping da fuk up while the tribal prayer “Who Can I Trust”, the start of “I Confront My Enemy” and “Chamunda” force the ethnic element more than the last two albums.

The cover of The Prodigy’s “Fuel the Fire” is a weak attempt to break the band's mold. Why not say ‘fuck it’ and just cover “Roots, Bloody Roots” already? At least it should be more convincing than a damn Prodigy cover.

And people wonder why there is no more originality in metal anymore? It’s because labels like Nuclear Blast sign bands like Ektomorf.
