Opus Atlantica
Opus Atlantica

Opus Atlantica -- featuring Johan Reinholdz from Andromeda and ex-Alien singer Pete Sandberg -- is a lot like Virgin Steel or Steel Prophet. Generic and average are the key words. Just like nearly every power metal band out there, of course there are some cool moments, but all in all it’s like eating bread and water instead of a fabulous lobster dinner: it leaves you wanting much, much more. The one thing that sort of freaked me out about Opus Atlantica was how much the singer sounds like Michael Jackson at times! Especially on the song “Holy Grail” where Sandberg said “of the holy grail” in the refrain, I was rolling with laughter at how ridiculous it is. That, coupled with some annoying choirs, kinda wears on my nerves. The one saving grace with most power metal bands is the crystal clear production and beautifully intricate guitar work, yet sadly Opus Atlantica lacks both of these things. Naturally there are some good moments, but nothing worth my time or yours. Yet another forgettable power metal band has weaseled its way into the listening queue of the almighty Wrathchild. While not terrible, Opus Atlantica’s self-titled album failed to keep my interest for more than the duration of the album; therefore, it gets tossed into the wasteland of forgettable albums. Wrathchild’s Choice Cuts: Holy Grail – Only because the singer sounds so much like good old MJ Falling Angel – If you can put up with the vocals, the keyboard part on this track is SOOO catchy
