What can you say about Dream Evil? They’re a massively cheesy power metal band led by Fredrik Nordström. Their first album, Dragonslayer, was horribly cliché power metal. Their new album, Evilized, is practically the exact same album. Yet for some reason I love this band. It has a certain power to it not found on most generic power metal bands. Singer Niklas Isfeldt is one of those non-gay singers who can hit the higher notes without sounding like a 12 year old boy. The riffs are heavy yet progressive, and the drumming is of course excellent because of ex-Mercyful Fate/King Diamond drummer Snowy Shaw. The album opens with the track “Break the Chains”, which was a great and classic way to start. It is one of those fist-pumping, classic chant refrain songs. It totally gets you in the mood for the inevitable cheese to come. The title track also has a very catchy tune that you can’t forget, even hours after you listen to it. “Bad Dreams” has an awesome beat to it and a badass riff in the background; it’s the kind of song that freezes an evil smile upon your face. Sadly there is a ballad or two in here, the gayest of which is “Forevermore”. “Children of the Night” has a sort of classic rock sound to it. All in all, you get a great sense of variety here. Even though some tracks sound pretty similar, there’s enough change and progression to keep you interested. There is one very disturbing thing about this album. It is the song known as “Made of Metal”. Now, if you’re lactose intolerant, I will have to ask you to stop reading this review, for I fear for your well being. The cheese level here is beyond anything I have ever seen before. A choice lyrical cut is as follows in script form: Niklas: I am so fucking metal, and so is my wife! His “Wife”: I am his wife! Niklas: SHUT UP!! The song continues singing about how “metal” they are, etc. I was completely blown away by the cheese, never in my 19 years on this earth have I been so completely encased in the orange bovine delicacy. I laughed my ass off at the sheer hilarity of it all, how can you not love this band after something like that? It is the equivalent of “H.M.J.” off of their first album (for those of you who aren’t familiar with “Dragonslayer”, HMJ stands for Heavy Metal Jesus). Evilized is worth your money for “Made of Metal” alone, and the other tracks are just excellent in and of themselves. Any fans of the cheese or power metal or both should grab this one. If you are not a fan of power metal, maybe give it a listen before you buy, you just may enjoy the taste of cheddar.
