Shut Out The Silence

Synopsis:
As if you could not tell. Yep-it’s metalcore. Solid metalcore at that.
Review:
I’m not even going to get into the whole metalcore debate here; I’m just going to discuss this competent and surprisingly heavy debut metalcore record from Texas’ She Killed Poetry.
Shut Out The Silence shares some traits with some of the other heavier, better quality metalcore records I’ve heard this year from the likes of Ligeia, I Killed The Prom Queen, Parkway Drive, Imperial, The Hope of Change, Dead Man In Reno, etc, in that it does everything right despite its many contrivances. It’s got a surprising amount of death metal heft and hack, both vocally and musically (“Murderous Hands”, “Shut Out the Silence”, “Off Your Throat”), though never veering into pure death core territory, there’s some nice harmonies (“Unable to Answer”, “We’ll Never Dance Again”), some clean vocals (“She’s Living Just Like You”, “This Obssession”), some caustic bite (“Send in the Bullets”), plenty of breakdowns (pretty much every track) and lots of lyrical clichés.
However, when taken as a whole, despite its acceptable quality and as much as I enjoyed the record, especially the production, the song writing is a bit stale and predictable at times. Only the magnificent, and I mean really good (but too short), closer “Breath of Life” made me hit the rewind button (repeatedly), which ultimately left a positive lasting impression of the record as a whole, despite not being to recall the other nine tracks.
Still, a decent metalcore record that should appeal to you that are still reading, And I will certainly keep an eye on this band to see if they can flesh out their sound and deliver more tracks in line with “Breath of Life”, which along with Dead Man In Reno’s “Cursed” and Ligeia's "The Blackout", has quickly become on of my favorite metalcore songs of the year.
