Season of Evil

For such a young band (formed in 1999), Season of Evil has undergone quite a few line-up changes. Has this helped the band any? Well, that’s questionable. On their self-titled debut, they actually use a drum machine because the band couldn’t obtain a drummer to suit their needs. As anyone could guess with song titles like “Axe in your Head” and “Embrace the Horror”, this band is heavily influenced by slasher and horror flicks. Musically this sounds like something closer to maybe the Misfits with kind of that punk type sound going on. The bass is surprisingly heavy, but never anything too exciting. The guitars as I said have a punk (and the occasional ounces of thrash and death) vibe going on, with some riffs sounding like they would be something you would hear in a B-Grade horror film. Often times it’s hard to hear it anyway because of the overpowering bass and vokills. Vokilly this reminds me of a poorly done Chris Barnes, and I mean poorly. It sounds like this guy is having a hard time reaching the guttural depths he wants. It’s pretty much straight forward caveman grunts and nothing remotely exciting at all. You can tell they used a drum machine on this release too, because of the bland and simple beats. They must’ve been pretty hard pressed for drummers in the area because the stuff on here sounds like something any average metal drummer could pull off. The production on this is pretty damn bad. The guitars have an ultra fuzzy sound during the power chord riffing, and the bass is often WAY too loud. The vokills really need to be turned down also. They drown out everything when they make their appearance. All you can really make out are some thuds from the bass and the occasional drum beat. I’m sorry to say it, but this is one of the worst (if not the worst) submissions I’ve come across here at MetalReview. This band has a lot of work ahead of them if they really want to get a decent project started with Season of Evil. Don’t feel bad about passing this band up at all, not even die-hard Misfits fans could find something enjoyable here.
