"The Kovenant" is a synth-based group which overlay various forms of metal including goth, industrial and hardcore into a modern rock/pop sound to fulfill their vision of music. It's a combination that might be best described as Rob Zombie meets Gary Neumann meets Trent Reznor. As I alluded to, the music is heavily based around the whole techno sound. It comes across as a hard-edged, modern sound with excellent production qualities. And if you’re one who likes this particular style of music, then this album is a worthwhile purchase. The album is certainly of high-caliber and is executed flawlessly. However, if you're the type who thinks synths are best utilized in moderation, or not at all, then this album is not for you. Personally, I had a hard time getting through "SETI". I'm not a fan of the techno, synth heavy sound, and the album became a sort of demented torture for me. There are highlights scattered throughout the album even for a non-fan, some of which are solid melodies and chorus sections. And even though some of the vocals are pretty interesting, including some in the blackened realm, there are various choral synth sections that are "spooky", and they made me think I was listening to a song about Frankenstien. Other sections felt like they belonged in a Japanese video game. Suffice to say, I had little interest in hearing either. There's nothing wrong with the performance or production, but it really comes down to personal preference on this one. Personally, I'd let this one pass. But if Rob Zombie is your thing, then The Koventant's "SETI" might fit perfectly into your collection.
