Synopsis:

Great title. Great cover. Great music. Too short.

Review:

In order to review this tantalizingly short three song EP, from this noisy Chigaco outfit I purchased and absorbed their previous offering, Breathe Fire, and thoroughly enjoyed the band’s take on expansive yet direct sludgy, post rock.

Combing a sort of Mastodon on Xanex lope with a burlier, more immediate Neur-Isis tone and drone, Raise the Red Lantern deliver three short slabs of brusque Chicago noise with some clever melodic undercurrents and salty vocals.

“Thrower of Stones” gets the short journey underway with bitter caterwauling and gruff riffage that throbs with a sort of tidal flow. Not the gentle ebb of Isis, but the shit filled lap of the Mississippi or Missouri river’s current and its debris crashing against the filth encrusted levies and dams in the dingy and derelict parts of the Midwest. “Wings of Fury” is a more urgent track with a corrosive pace, yet contains a great pure rock lull and peak. “Fucking Temptress” is a gnarly yet hazy stoner rock track that saunters with red eyes and a buzzing, lustful prose.

In all, you have to decide if three relatively short tracks is worth your money, if so, grab this and I highly recommend check out Breath Fire for a more extended and expansive sound.
