Shadow of A Dying Dream

Two years back I reviewed a demo from Denmark’s Frameless Scar, and now in late 2006, I’m listening to yet another four-song release from these guys. I’m guessing that they must still be waiting for a call from some considerate record label, and that this release is another promo of new tunes. This is a shame, as this self-released album sounds far more professional than the majority of albums that come across my desk.

First of all, the production is of high quality. The bass rumbles, the leads squeal, and fuzz is non-existent. The four tracks are all around five minutes long, featuring melodic death metal that ventures into somber territory. “Abstract” comes first, seamlessly blending punchy, staccato riffing with thundering low end rhythm and a varied vocal delivery. “Downward” really relies on the double-bass drumming to set a determined pace. Tremolo-picked death metal guitarwork lies predictably atop the percussion. A cleanly-sung passage midway through the song comes as a slight surprise, but the delivery is pure rock, nothing whiny about it. The vocals of Jan and Nicolaj cover a wide spectrum from the aforementioned cleans, to a guttural roar, to a stout but standard DM bark. My only real gripe with Frameless Scar stems from their occasional abuse of vocals, when the music is their strong point.

“Solitary 2nd Floor” has a strong In-Quest vibe of atmospheric death metal through strong use of the bottom-dwelling bass. A long drawn-out solo closes out the last minute of the song, with the admirable studio mix really making the last few notes come alive. “A Brighter Level” thrashes along at the start, before slowing down a touch for another dark lead. This tune rolls along at a high intensity level, with smart use of sung vocals and numerous solos.

I’m tired of reviewing self-made promos from these Danes. I’d much rather listen to a full-length label-sponsored album. Who is going to make this happen?
