Retrogression is the biggest thing to come out of Finland since Ludwig Borga! OK, so that statement is a little skewed, but it should tell you that this band is just getting started (bonus points if you know who the hell Ludwig Borga is). Being from Finland, it isn’t too surprising to hear elements of countrymen Children of Bodom and Sentenced on display in their sophomore release. There is also some of that new American metalcore sound present. That being said, I must say I’m quite impressed with the four tracks here. I could do without some of the more emo-esque clean vocal moments, but the riffs are all there. There’s some melodeath stuff, some mid-tempo groove, and some thrashing going on. These kids hold it all together well without sounding disjointed or aimlessly searching for a sound. Heck, even when those clean vocals kick in, the riffing is sweet enough that you’re willing to forgive it, even more so when that Alexi Laiho scream emerges.

They’re still a little rough around the edges, as any band in the demo stage usually is, but this EP is right about on par with, if not beyond, any number of signed bands doing the same style stateside. Given just a bit more time, they will likely be taking their proper place alongside them.
