Shat
Cuntree
4.5
Those of you familiar with the misanthropic clamour of the Buddyhead.com webzine will undoubtedly recognize the name Shat, who are one of the site/label’s oldest signees. Like labelmates Gayrilla Biscuits and The Icarus Line, these guys are straightforward, gimmicky humorous hardcore/rock (oh wait, are The Icarus Line supposed to be serious?). In this particular case, the joke is communicated via a litany of goofy Big Black-type sexual lyrics, and while it’s kinda funny for a few spins, Cuntree is both too short and too musically dull to amount to more than a quick chuckle.
Hardcore might be a bit of a misnomer for Shat’s sound, as their songs are built around the jokes rather than around any particular genre. “Double Double Chin,” for example, is a half-rapped System of a Down sound-alike that’s made more…um…authentic by the alternation between Serj Tankian singing and angry rapping. In a lot of these songs the jokes rely upon the presence of sexual terminology rather than any actual punch line. The result is a decidedly Tom Green-esque atmosphere as vocalists chant “it’s time to poopy on a boobie” or “show your tits” over and over again to marching tom rhythms and Tomahawk-Chop-inspired melodies.
Honestly I’m not sure who’s supposed to be the target audience for this shit; it’s not funny enough to work as stand-alone humor and it’s certainly not good enough music to listen to for its own sake. Good Clean Fun and Gayrilla Biscuits are funnier in execution, GWAR and Totally Fucking Gay have more entertaining concepts, and these guys have...well, boring music and subject manner that wouldn’t make your grandma wince nowadays.
Basically, this is for you if the use of the word “poopy” makes you laugh.
