The Theory of Abstract

This is going to be a short review. I threw this disc in and an acoustic guitar kicks in. I hear some ambient effects rolling in the background and the sound of a high-pitched woodblock as it's reverb slowly fades out like the "ping" of a submarine's sonor. I first thing I thought was, "cool, sounds like Agalloch"! 3 minutes later I'm rolling into track #2. Nice, more mellow guitars. At this point I'm waiting for some heavy ass melodic music to kick in. I wait. I wait some more. I finally roll into track three. Cool! Some heavy sounding guitars. "Alright...I'm ready to rock here", I thought to myself. Well, these guitars turn into noisy feedback with flanging and panning effects. This is where things really turn sour. Basically the rest of the disc (roughly 42 minutes) is essentially nothing but noise. Distorted guitars feeding back and run through a bunch of lame effects. Any one of us could have played on this album...talent not required! There are a couple short numbers where the guitar is actually playing something. But essentially you still end up with 42 minutes of noise. No drums or metal riffs to be found. Some mellow strings and the rest is mostly distorted noise. "The Theory of Abstract Light" should rename themselves "The Practice of Abstract Noise". Don't waste your money. The label's website offers an mp3 for download...this track is about as good as it gets. The production sounds like it would have been on the right track, but with mostly effects as a production base, I just can't give it a good overall score.
