This demo offers six songs of solid but minor league thrash tinged hardcore. Riffs are culled from the more metallic offerings of the Cro-Mags and Madball, with dissonant wailing solos spliced into a few tracks. There are some excellent tempo changes and slow mosh parts, and the sparse production conveys them with the kind of immediacy lacking on a lot of modern records. The songs range from one to two minutes apiece, which helps hide some obvious songwriting deficiencies and keeps things engaging and aggressive. Unfortunately, Obscene Gesture don't have enough heft or technical skill to make these quick shots as powerful as they need to be, or the kind of songwriting talent to flesh them out into something more substantial.
The vocals are suited to this kind of gutter thrash; gruff, discernible, and relating all kinds of brainless musings. And, even though lyrics should never make or break an album, they kind of illuminate the band's real failings. This is amateur stuff, even for a demo. There are some riffs worth hearing, but there's a ton of work to be done by this band to get them up to par with the rest of the field.
