Review of Lucky Striker 201 - Self Titled

Not really sure what to say about this one. Do you like Korn? I’m not especially into them either. Lucky Striker 201 have missed the whole nu-metal thing by at least five years, and their able impersonation of the aforementioned genre forefathers probably isn’t gonna be a big selling point to any prospective audience. I sort of dislike dignifying this release with a review, but then again, the band is offering it for free download on their website, so if you ever liked the whole nu-metal thing, I recommend that you slink off to their URL and download this on the sly. To be fair, it’s better than most of the bands who played the style, though that isn’t really saying much.

The songwriting on this album is linear and typical, with the requisite soft/loud contrasts and “tortured” vocal performance a la Jonathan Davis. The musicianship is nothing special and the riffs aren’t anything to rave about. At best, this resembles plodding, mid tempo post-thrash, and at worst, well, you know. The problem is, even when a passage on this disc resembles something that I might listen to for pleasure, the band goes and fouls it up with whiny vocals and painfully simple orchestration. The production is quite good I suppose, although that’s the only real selling point.

I imagine that the reader has a pretty good sense of what this release sounds like. To recap, nu-metal, even that of an above average caliber, went out around the same time as baggy pants, and thank f’n Christ for that. On the other hand, this album is being offered one hundred percent free by the band, so if you harbor a few guilty pleasures in your album collection, there’s no harm in giving this a try. Caveat emptor, nonetheless...
