Review of Iron Maiden - Rock in Rio (DVD)

My first instinct for this dissection was to throw down a review completely paying homage to Maiden and all that they have accomplished, droning on and on about the importance of Maiden and so on. Then I came to the conclusion of what's the point, by now everyone within the metal scene should know of Maiden and the impact they had within the scene. For us approaching 30 years old and beyond are well aware of the NWOBHM icons. Their high standard of creation is no secret and frankly Maiden's music is pretty much fucking timeless wouldn't you say? Where I do get a little disappointed is within the younger crowd who won't give Maiden the time of day anymore because their music is "dated and sounds cheesy" etc. It is a loss not to walk down Maiden's collection every now and then, these were and are power metal fucking pioneers, plain and simple. I do have to admit that over the years I find myself not returning to my own Maiden collection as frequently but the respect and admiration will always be there. It's when releases such as this DVD comes along and kicks me in the ass to remind me of what a great band Iron Maiden is. The Maiden of the Millennium is still one outstanding entity and still fully impressive if not more so now even. This DVD is the absolute perfect showcase of Iron Maiden. Lets start with the live production and filming of Rock in Rio. There's absolutely nothing I could rip into within, it's completely top notch all the way through and as professionally produced as they come. I know that for a long time I kept seeing tid-bits of updates on this DVD and each time it said "Harris is in the studio editing and mixing the new DVD" and I thought to myself how long does it take Steve? Well it's quite obvious after you see it the reasons behind the delay, if Harris was going to stamp Maiden's name on it he of course wanted it to be perfect. So Steve, fine fucking work once again, you savvy fucking bloak. As for the catalogue of Maiden tunes played, Rock in Rio of course has them all, all the expected and also a few surprises. I personally fed right into the songs played from Brave New World, damn I love that release and with the huge crowds of Rio singing right along with Blood Brothers, Ghost of the Navigator and Brave New World, the chills down the spine come immediately. The showmanship is ever apparent as Dickinson works the crown flawlessly and Janick Gers is without a doubt the full on show boat guitar player both proving over and over again that Maiden is as strong as ever. Harris of course assumes his post at the floor monitor with one foot resting on it while singing the lyrics the whole time, fucking Harris who can fuck with him? These guys love what they're doing and it shows time and time again, it's definitely refreshing to see many smiles on the members of Maidens' faces. Bottom Line: If you're like me and your Maiden discs sit for great lengths of time until that one drunken evening when the whole goddam collection wakes up, you need to own this DVD. It's packed full of great timeless Maiden tunes along with the extra features we've come to expect from DVDs. There are interviews with all members, an insane amount of still pictures, a day in the life segment and of course the live show itself, what more can you ask for really? This is Iron Maiden at their finest along with the element of Millennium technology on their side. It is fully metal through and through and if you say differently you can indeed pull your fucking pants up BOY!
