When I was still playing metal and metal related music I had this portable tape player/recorder…actually it was my wife’s. It was very, very cool. It recorded in stereo, with auto equalizing and noise dampening. I made tapes on that thing which sounded better than some demos people paid real money for; allowing for one take crappiness, of course. I still have a few cassettes wandering around my closet with recordings of my glory days, which are over. So I can’t take listening to them, which is why they are in the closet. I should get them transfered onto the computer. Once my mid life crisis passes, I will regret letting them oxidize into unlistenability.
This three song demo sounds almost exactly like the tapes we used to make. What it brings to the table is some slightly off kilter power/traditional metal, oozing character and fun. The guitars carom between Maiden-esque licks and almost Anthrax-ian riffing, all with a decidedly non-operatic singer. It has a very mid eighties European flair to it - over the top and English as a second language style, but very graveled and maybe a bit of that early sanfran thrash. But these bozos seem to “get it”. Yeah, it’s retro, but it’s FUN retro, right down to the strangely “We thought it sounded cool when we were drunk” background “ghost” vocals. WoooOOOooooaaaaooohhh. Fucking funny shit...
Bottom line, I could get a kick out of the real thing, recorded by someone who also “gets it” but with a budget. If you get a chance to check this out, and you are in the mood for good riffing and a smile, I suggest you do so.
