Where Evil Lies

7.1

Well this is not bad at all. A little death and roll always serves to settle the old stomach after a lifetime of eating the world’s shit. Somewhere between Crown and Defleshed, this thing has fury to spare. And just enough inventiveness to make it stand out. There are even a few male and female cleans running around…and they aren’t making me sick...! Recorded with enthusiasm, all in all a solid little record you should check out.

The singer is very reminiscent of Johan from Crown, the songwriting is almost punkish sometimes, but not in the flowery metalcore sense. In the God We Love Hammering Bar Chords sense. This is melodic like Supersuckers is melodic: pure gut level rocking. With the kind of abandon that gives it a more basement feel than even it’s closest relatives, it still maintains the Death Metal edge this kind of thing needs to survive my reviews.

Quibbles? Well, the bottom end gets lost in the mix. These guitars are chock full of vitamin Mid. I could have used some mud, frankly. Also, now and then the songs kind of devolve into simple squelchy mash fests…but you know, even this has it’s charm. Nevertheless, metal fans may be off put by the messiness, especially in an era of near crystalline recording techniques at anyone’s disposal. And “26 Hours” really didn’t quite get where I think it was headed. The record’s slow track, it kind of meanders a bit more than is healthy.

Whatever. It's not perfect. But you know what? You can bottom line this with just a few words: Fun, Frantic, Fucking Furious. If you hear this and don’t like it at least a little then fuck off and never read my reviews again, pussy.
