Herman Rarebell
Too Late For Peace...
5.5
Herman Rarebell is the drummer for the Scorpions, or was. I honestly haven't paid any attention to the Scorpions in a very long time. Although "China White" is a fucking great song, the rest of their catalog ranges from OK to pretty bad.
Which does not explain how their drummer's name came to represent a grindcore record. It's an obscure reference even for a style devoted to them. But however it got there, Herman Rarebell's name is not the only thing this band shares with tired musical references.
It's crusty old grind with none of the stupid movie samples, nor Nasum thick production. And while the songs are typical in that they are short and oft times pointless, the band does get some mileage out of its groove. One or two tracks actually become songs instead of bridges and pre-chorus, so you get a chance to listen to the band actually play. And that's fine, but not exceptional.
The production is very trebly, the drums being coffee can shitty and the guitars are as often as not getting lost in the vocals and symbols. You can gleen everything you would want to from it all though, as it’s mixed back into something relatively solid. Again, fine, but not exceptional.
And that's the bottom line. It's just another grind record. Its most interesting aspects are the lack of stupid movie samples and the ability the band shows in its mosh/grooves. But it's all just going the exact same place every other grind band seems to be going anymore. Maybe that's a place you want to be, but I have had my fill of it, thanks. It's good for methfreaking hemp heads who still find this style relevant somehow. The rest of us can stick with Pig Destroyer.
