Coit
Brutal Fantasy
4.2
France has been responsible for some amazing music here of late. But Coit end that run with an amateurish take on thrash/death metal meets hardcore that while energetic and burly, just comes across as what it is - a well meaning but ultimately unimpressive demo rather than a Brutal Fantasy. (A real brutal fantasy would be more like being blown by a pre Trimspa Anna Nicole Smith after having my wang smothered in barbeque sauce).
This Brutal Fantasy consists of 8 studio tracks and 4 live tracks, none of which remotely caught my interest. There's chugging, occasionally blasting riffs layered by the usual hardcore scream/growl and most of it driven by a sturdy but unimaginative rhythm section. It’s not until 5 tracks in, where the tracks register a pulse, and even then it's over in under 2 minutes. “Give Me Your Pain” hints at something a little more developed but falls into more unimaginative noise. Otherwise Coit just ineffectually delivers 8 tracks of mildly pummeling thrashcore that has little value or need for a record deal.
On the plus side though, for a demo Brutal Fantasy is decently produced and Coit do seem hardworking and entertaining in a live environment as the 4 live tracks show. The appreciative home crowd seems to like them and I imagine a pretty impressive pit goes on for a live set, but live sets aren’t about depth and song writing which Coit lack, but more about energy and presence, which Coit seem to have.
I’ve got way too much other quality metal to listen to and review to spend much more time on this. If you're ever in France, see ‘em live, but otherwise don’t waste money on this.
