Vorkreist
Sublimation XXIX A
6.7
Nasty French death/black metallers Vorkreist return with their second offering of gritty, filthy blasphemous metal and while the French black metal scene seems to be flourishing with dark psychosis, don’t underestimate this evil quartet.
Basically if you like the recent Drawn and Quartered or Hacavitz albums or any of those bands’ obvious peers (Morbid Angel, Incantation, Belphegor, etc), you will enjoy this wound infecting slab of hate, as they have tightened up both their song structures and production (a grainy yet effective love/hate issue with their debut). The result is a predictable, yet seething album of blackened death metal that should not disappoint anyone brave enough to try something French and not just ambient black metal.
Fusing vitriolic black metal blasting with a few moments of slower, more menacing death metal, Vorkreist make no pretenses of being anything more than a vessel of sonic carnage - just dive straight for the blistering title track for proof. There's no creepy intros or segues, just eviscerating, sheer velocity and primal rage. Going straight for the throat with opener “Great Orders of Sterile Lunacy”, careening through “Thy Death Divine” and “Torture Kult”, lurching though “Sodogma”, sneering through “Void of Grace” and finally drawing the knife across your throat to end the effort with with the torturous “Ecstatic in Revulsion”, Vorkriest don’t let up. They also seem to be refining their gnarlier death metal side, rather than the gritty, blackened, raw visage of extremity, though present seems more low-end and less grainy.
You're probably not going to remember much of the album’s substance when the dust settles as Vorkreist aren’t doing anything remotely original, but did you remember what happened when you got knocked out? No. You just knew something bad happened.
