If sharing a label with bands like Caedere, Torsofuck, Avulsed, Putrid Pile, Pustulated, Corpsefucking Art, and Cerebral Effusion doesn’t clue you in to the general direction of Artery Eruption, I really don’t know what the hell you’re doing reading this. I’m personally more partial to the sound of bands on Unmatched Brutality, but there is something heart warning about the somewhat sloppy, raw and unrefined sound of a band like Artery Eruption albeit oftentimes it serves nothing more than just a passing amusement.
I thought we all decided that trashcan-sounding drums were bad with the dawning of Metallica’s St. Anger, but I guess these guys never got the memo because the percussion sounds fucking horrible no matter how you look at it. Production's not everything in the goregrind/deathgrind community, but when it’s so thickly muted and incomprehensible it’s often way too damn hard to tell what’s going on beneath the bedlam. The vocalist spews out the vilest, guttural sounds as the next band but the problem is it sounds almost like an imitation of every band that’s preceded them. At least there’s more than the one monotone sound found all the way through the last Prostitute Disfigurement album Left in Grisly Fashion. The guitar riffs blend into a thick bass heavy fuzz of noise that I’m sure would sound better if I could tell what the fuck was going on. On the occasion when the band decides to slow it down and there’s finally a moment of sparse clarity in the slower chunky groove sections on songs like “Asexual Virgin Killer” and “Explosion of a Thick Orange Pourage-Like Substance”, Artery Eruption's sound finally comes out sounding the most like a gore soaked version of Malignancy.
Though a bit much in some instances the samples leading into the tracks themselves are at the least a humorous break from the cut and dry seriousness of most goregrind and deathgrind bands, but by the time “Inexplicable Scrotal Mutilation” rolls around the jokes, they have gotten old and stale. Yeah, I know, this is supposed to be sick and demented an utterly grotesque, but by the time the album closer “Ripped with Anal Forceps,” I’m hard pressed to give a damn what Artery Eruption is doing when I know so many have already succeeded where they fail.
Besides, I thought Brodquin already completely fucking slaughtered any competition in the arena of brutality with Methods of Execution but somehow bands keep following in their footsteps, destined to walk in their shadows. Maybe Gouging Out the Eyes of Mutilated Infants would have come with wide eyes and open arms a few years back, but by now with so many bands expanding and evolving the genre, Artery Eruption is like that fat chick you banged when you were completely fucking hammered and all you want is to forget about it, but she keeps calling.
With bands like Guttural Secrete (a personal favorite of mine) constantly upping the ante in extremity, Artery Eruption seems doomed to be that band that everyone is always trying to describe by comparing them to their betters. Lets be honest here, there are plenty of bands that exceed the quality of Gouging Out Eyes of Mutilated Infants without much effort and I think it'd be a daunting effort for the band to ever really stand out.
