I have to say that I am definitely enjoying the second wave of death metal. The fast brutality and amazing technicality is forcing many musicians to take it up a notch to produce a kick-ass album to stick in our head; and for us listeners this is a great thing. Origin definitely hails along these lines with blistering fast guitar riffs and monstrous blast beats. This is my first experience with Origin and definitely won't be my last. Right off the bat Origin kicks you in the face with the song "Larvae of the Lie" and doesn't stop until the final track "Implosion of Eternity". The musicianship in this album is excellent. Guitarists, Paul Ryan and Jeremy Turner, will send you screaming with riffs that go from insanely fast to just plain hard-hitting heavy. Although I wish there were at least a few solos, it doesn't detract from the album in any way. John Longstreth, formerly of Angel Corpse, heads up the percussion; and any of you that have had experience with that once great band know this guy can tare it up on the kit. He's extremely fast and lets us know he's there with his high-powered double-kicks. My only complaint about the musicianship is the lack of bass. Mike Flores is hardly ever heard other than in "Mental Torment", where he gets a short 10 second bass filler. On to the vokills, James Lee, is an excellent vocalist. I've never heard Origin's previous singer, but right now I don't care, because this guy tares it up. He can go from a dark menacing growl to a high-pitched demonic-like shriek in seconds. Not to mention the backing vokills done by Jeremy and Paul add to the level of insanity of this band. In many songs you will find James carrying a heavy growl only to hear Paul or Jeremy in the background continuing the verse; which in my opinion is very cool and adds a great element to the music. On another note, this album contains possibly one of the best samples to open up a death metal track. Buy this CD and listen to the song "Inhuman" and you'll know what I'm talking about. The lyrics contained on here vary with the topics. In the opening song "Larvae of the Lie" they seem to deal with religion, while in "Meat for the Beast" you have the typical death metal gore lyrics, while "Implosion of Eternity", James discusses the apocalypse and lyrics that just plain make you think. Having varied song subjects adds a great aspect to a band. It leaves you with something more original than the typical death metal gore lyrics or black metal Christian bashing lyrics on every song. All in all this entire album just plain and simple kicks ass and I would recommend it to anyone who likes his or her music fast and heavy. My favorite tracks are most definitely "Portal", "Inhuman", and "Implosion of Eternity". This is definitely for fans of Cryptopsy and Suffocation. To all who purchase this: enjoy, you have just entered death metal heaven.
