Hate Plow
Only Law Is Survival
7.6
I think that when HatePlow re-releases this album, which actually is in the near future, they need to re-title it so it is a more fitting description of what the material actually beholds. Some suggestions would be "The Only Law Is Dave's Law", or they could just re-name the band "DavePlow"……. For those of you who have heard this latest edition of the "Culross Chronicles", you know what I am referring to. To the people who haven't, allow me to elaborate……This album is a complete and utter percussive onslaught by drummer Dave Culross. His fantastic drumwork can be heard in many places……He employed his skin-skills in the last Suffocation release, current day Gorgasm, Malevolent Creation, and has also done an album for Incantation, as well. I have never heard so many blast beats for so long in so many songs as I have here. It's very similar to a machine gun rounding off shots for infinity, and then some. I might also add that "Addicted to Porn" has the fastest double-bass beat that I have ever heard performed by a human drummer. I might be wrong to say that is the fastest ever recorded. I am not totally sure. But this is some absolutely amazing drumming nonetheless. HatePlow is a "side project" formed mostly by the members of Malevolent Creation. Apparently, they wanted to go for more of a "grind" sound, which they do achieve, to a degree. Phil and Rob have managed to cultivate some interesting and catchy guitar riffs here, but it is nothing mind-blowing. Gone are any flashy solos that may pop up in a Malevolent Creation release. I think if these brutes wanted more of a grind sound to HatePlow, the guitars need to be tuned a tad bit lower and they need to be mixed on a level that's at least a little closer to the Culross explosion prevalent throughout the album. Kyle Symons takes the helm for vocal assassination. I find myself chuckling quite a bit at the lyrical content and the way it is delivered by Kyle. Some of this stuff is absolutely hilarious! With songs like "Fuck the Millenium", "Emotional Catastrophe", and of course, "Addicted to Porn", I can't help but laugh. Symons is good at making the state of our country sound amusing and devastating at the same time. But when all is said and done, what makes this album is the drumwork. It is very tight, solid, and crisp. With all the tempo changes taking place, it truly is a wonder how the drumming stays on time. It's actually hard to listen to any other instruments for very long, and if you can, it's because the blast beat has let up for two whole seconds to let you breathe. But then your break is over and Dave resumes his brutal kick-drum abuse. If you're looking for a "monumental" release w/ "atmosphere" then don't save your Burger King check for this one. However, if you want to hear some of the most insane and amazing drumming ever put to tape, and some lyrical hilarity to boot, then this is definitely worth the money. "Now I start my self-inflicted rape……………".
