Fans of bludgeoning, relentless, grinding, slam-groove death metal………….gather 'round. All others……….well, if you are open minded ,take a gander at what I have to say about this album. If you're not a fan of pure heaviness and absolutely unbelievably low, gutteral "toilet bowl" vocals, then you may just be better of listening to your Saxon cd's than checking out this pure slab of raw chunk-beef death-grind…….. Let me just start off by giving you all a brief history of this group of brutes. Devourment hails from Texas. They first displayed their form of complete musical disgust with a 3 song demo, which included "Shroud of Encryption", "Festering Vomitous Mass", and "Choking on Bile". Response from underground gore-heads was apparently quite overwhelming, so the band went ahead w/ an 8 song "full-length" entitled "Molesting the Decapitated". The most recent album I present to you now, "138", symbolizes the collection of one brand new song, "Babykiller", the 3 demos, and the 8 songs off their full-length………. My 1st experience w/ Devourment came immediately after purchasing Molesting the Decapped about a month ago. I had put the disc in expecting bad production, muddy sounding instruments, and I thought every song was basically going to sound the same. I am happy to say I was completely and utterly incorrect in my assumptions. I believe these boys kick things off w/ an excerpt from an interview with Jeffrey Dahmer. When the music does kick in, you realize that you need to turn it up louder than usual, but the instruments sound remarkably balanced and crisp for music in this genre. There is the trademark low-end rumble, but also included are the clear sounding highs of the cymbal work, and the snare sounds very good. These guys then proceed to get your head banging back and forth……….violently. Every song on Molesting the Decapped will get your head nodding. I personally guarantee it. Shit, I did so much head-thrashing to this album after I bought it, that the next day I felt like I had a pinched nerve in my neck. I swear, one of these times my head is just gonna fly right across the fucking room. If you are a fan of extreme vocals, then you're gonna love this. Ruben "Goregurgle" Rosas speaks lower than I can belch. I can tell you that I only deciphered one word on the whole album before looking at the lyrics. To me, that's just something you have to admire……..I thought that I had read some of the sickest, most disgusting words around, that is, until my eyes were permanently scarred for life after reading these nightmares on paper. I was very surprised to hear that these monstrous slabs were really quite tightly-knit, as far as song structure and quality go. The songs are just chock-full of ultra-low heavy breakdowns, and during the 1st few listens, they may sound a little monotonous, but you will still bang your head. The artificial and pinch harmonics are very well-placed. The snare drum has a very unique sound, and Brad Fincher does showcase some speedy snare work. Of course, the double bass is nowhere near lacking. Very thunderous percussion overall, w/ crisp sounding highs, and THE THUNDER DRUM is also incorporated quite often! Awesome!!! Now, onto the "138" disc. My favorite Devourment song HAS to be their 1ST and newest song on this disc, "Babykiller". I swear, this band sets out on the mission to make you mosh and take your brain for a roller-coaster ride w/ all the damn headbanging you'll be doing. It's a good thing we've got that liquid "cushion" around our cranial organs, or I'd be a crippled retard, drooling profusely all over my lap by now. "Babykiller" is worth the price of the disc alone. The 3 demos that follow are all rough versions of songs that can be found re-recorded and better sounding on Molesting the Decapped. "138" is the ULTIMATE album to headbang and/or snap your neck to, as well as just plain old destroy shit to. Crack open a few 12-packs w/ your buddies. Invite their girlfriends (if they exist). Chicks will dig the misogynistic overtones prevalent abound, as well as the killer vintage photography inside the Molesting the Decapped booklet. Grandma will enjoy the elderly-inspired carnage that speaks of raping and disemboweling senior citizens. My advice to gore fiends and anyone else still reading this review is to go get this now. It is not an album that breaks alot of new ground, it just takes everything that already exists to the absolute limit. Super-offensive nightmarish words. Big-sound guitar grinds everywhere. Gutteral toilet bowl vocals all the way through. Sorry Dimmu fans, no black-metal "de-testicled" screams here. This is just pure beer-drinking, headbanging fun , and you WILL headbang! Your pencil necks could use a good workout anyway, right?……….In the contest to be the heaviest band alive, Devourment wins hands-down. "Don't Fuckin' Mess With Texas"!
