Maybe it's just me, but this band's name is damn near unpronounceable the first ten or so times you try and say it. With that out of the way, let's take a look at what Mucupurulent has to offer with their latest album, Soulreaver. The album is very groove oriented death/grind musically (on occasion it reminded me a bit of old Carcass) and has the occasional industrial feel too it, but it never goes full on into the electronica. One thing I found interesting about the album is that there is no bass, just two guitarists and a drummer. This doesn't necessarily hinder the album, but it doesn't help it either. To me, Timo Reichert's vokills remind of Chuck Billy's (Testament) death growls; which is really cool because I dig Chuck Billy's brutal vokills. One thing I noticed about the drums is that Ralph Gläser seems to really like his crash symbols. I'm not sure if it's because they stand out more as far as the production goes, but they are always a prominent force is his drum sound. I was not able to obtain lyrics for this album, but from what I've seen their older releases dealt with porno-gore so I'm sure they're nothing to get too excited about. The production on Soulreaver is pretty good, but my only complaint is that the symbols are almost a bit too high volume wise. Other then that it's pretty solid. I've been going back and forth as to whether or not I liked this disc since I popped it in my stereo. There were times when I could get into it, but there were others where I was just waiting for it too end. This is an album I can see easily collecting dust a week from now, although it's pretty solid out of the package. If you're looking for a quick metal fix, then this is a good album. If you demand longer replay value out of your music then I would pass on the latest from Mucupurulent.
