No wonder Hate was in the queue for this long. I mean seriously, are Lies this bad? What we have is groove-laden rock, and to paraphrase Murphy’s Law, everything that can go wrong, does. Not only are the nine songs played by rookie musicians – excuse the passive voice – but the lyrics are atrocious, perhaps intolerable. And since the vocals remain clean for the most part, you’ll absorb every last cliché that radiates from this demo. Of course, immature rhyme schemes punctuate the inane lyrics, so why don’t we examine some of them:

“This World” – “I hate people…nothing’s sacred / just kill them all / stack the bullets / and they will fall…just another bullshit day / just another bullshit life”

“Secret” has some decent grooves, marred by shaky musicianship ultimately, but continues with the subpar lyrical assault. “You spoonfed me / I hate you now…everyone has a secret / I have a skeleton closet”

“You Could Be Mine” – “I take weed / I take shrooms / I take acid / I take E / I take opium / I take valium / I love this shit / With your coke-nose / pill-poppin’ mouth / heroin-veins / Visine-eyes / you could be mine / you could be mine”

It gets worse than that. Believe me. At any rate, there’s simply not much to like about Lies. The things they toss in for differentiation (growls, etc.) are ineffectual, as is the vocal delivery, which is unstable at best. Like a blind guy trying to step aboard an escalator, Travis (vocals, guitars) hesitates when he sings, depositing half a word where a whole one should be. To say the least, it’s awkward and becomes aggravating by the time “Out of My Head” enters your media player. On that note, I’ll be glad to get Lies out of my head. However, as far as constructive criticism is concerned, I beg this four-piece to acquire feedback from someone who’s unbiased before they ship their next demo to a professional site. I know there’s no such thing as bad publicity, but there is such a thing as being unfit and ill-prepared. And buddy, Hate just ain’t worth that much, certainly not the $5 they’re charging for it.
