Now I know it’s been too long in waiting, but MetalReview is pleased to finally bring you a metalcore review. No, no, there’s no need to thank me, we just do it because we care. Not only am I reviewing some metalcore today, but SoCal metalcore! The lengths we go to keep the readers happy…

All jests aside, this new release by Scars of Tomorrow is just the thing you’ve been waiting for…if you loved their last album. The Horror of Realization plays like side two of their Victory Records debut, Rope Tied to the Trigger, with the lone exception of atmospheric wanderings towards the end. Just as that album was a proficient display of high-energy, noisy, chunky metalcore, as is this album. I hear a lot of Chimaira in their sound, minus the overt thrash influences that the Ohio boys carry. The vocals are especially reminiscent of Mark Hunter, with that distinctive crazed scream; harsh, yet discernible. When not screaming, vocalist Mike Milford uses that sung-spoken voice style that shows up from time to time in the -core world.

“The False Love in Lust” manages to be loud and sloppy, while still being catchy. Compare that to “The Marks of Time”, a song that is faster, yet tighter. However, loud and loose seems to be more common this time around. They are not afraid to use harmonics and other higher-pitched guitar tricks in abundance, usually melded into melodies. “The Struggle” is the high point of the album, and it comes right at the end. A clean guitar riff leads into a passionate high-note melody, while Mike expounds gruffly underneath the guitars. A fast and powerful climax concludes the song, leading into the outro track, an atmospheric relaxant entitled “Onthe15”.

Scars of Tomorrow bring more intensity than the hordes of Swedish-influenced metalcore groups, although they lack in the technical abilities of those bands, so it’s just a matter of which you prefer. This is recommended for fans of…well, Scars of Tomorrow.
