I found myself in Prague while the Obscene Extreme festival was going on this year, but due to the curfew and other restrictions imposed by the chaperons of my trip, I was unable to attend. Naturally this was a source of frustration for me, since big names like Pungent Stench, Blood Duster, and Haemorrhage were playing. Anyhow, this compilation album includes tracks by a number of the artists that played this year, including the more popular bands and the virtual unknowns. Naturally, some of the material is very good and some of it is mediocre, but the average quality is high. On the whole, I would recommend this compilation; most of the tracks are good, and these sorts of things are as good a way as any to discover new artists.

The comp kicks off with a number of excellent tracks. The Blood Duster cut is very catchy, as is to be expected, the Haemorrhage track has excellent vocals and also happens to be previously unreleased, and the Death Reality song is a definite standout. I haven’t heard the band before, but their brutal, technical approach is appealing. Next up are two Regurgitate tracks, and I think most people pretty much know what to expect as far as that band goes: no frills blasting grindcore. The Avulsed song, “Goresplattered Suicide,” which happens to be the title track of their latest release, is also excellent. There are too many songs to do a full track by track rundown, but most of the selections are of high quality.

I usually don’t listen to compilation CDs, but this particular one is really good. I would encourage readers to check it out, or at least look into some of the bands featured on it. I’d give almost all of them favorable reviews if given the chance, so you can’t really go wrong with any of the bands on this. This is definitely a good release from Obscene Productions, and it’ll probably get a few more listens before I’m finished with it.
