Mistress, containing members of Sally, Anaal Nathrakh, Frost, and Benediction, return with another superior record that propels them even further above the rest of the metal world. Following a tradition of change, In Disgust We Trust is just as different as Chronovisor was from the debut. For this latest incarnation, however, it's not the easiest thing to do, but do your best to dream of what Brutal Truth and later-era Entombed would sound like together. Got that? Now toss in some clean sung viking material, and ball-bursting 80's glam screams and see if you can still wrap your mind around that one.
Unleashing a mid-paced death n' roll sound on the first and title track, the gruff, menacing, and grimy vocals give you an idea that what you're about to hear is anything but pure. Remarkably, vocalist Dave Cunt seamlessly lets loose a brand of higher-pitched grating screams in addition to the lower ones. "Static" best shows Mistress' groovy side, sounding like a b-side of Entombed's Uprising until an uncharacteristic guitar lead introduces the viking metal vocals of the chorus. While this might throw listeners off initially, after a few spins, you begin to anxiously await the strange twists that the band brings. Songs like "Fucking Fuck" and "At Arms Length" found the comparisons to Brutal Truth with their furious punk/hardcore-rooted riffs and the perfectly timed rampaging double bass rhythms. The groove-tinged "Whiskey Tastes Better..." again provides another shocking moment when hysterical high pitched vocals enter. In the end, all these strange parts prove that In Disgust We Trust is, if anything, an extremely entertaining listen. It's something that can be enjoyed from start to finish, right on down to the peculiar chanting and crazed guitar solos towards the end of "Me Ves Y Sufres" or the gang-shouts on "Talking to God".
Be thankful for this. Mistress are giving everyone yet another chance to latch on to some top-tier metal that's consistent in quality throughout their entire career. I know it might be hard to believe given the fact that they signed Adema, but it's apparent that Earache knew what they were doing in signing these guys. Don't miss out a third time. Keep an eye open for a split they're doing with Venomous Concept, a band which features members of Melvins, Napalm Death, and Brutal Truth.
